Hardware

This includes servers, desktop and mobile computers required to store, access and process data. Data capture devices such as scanners, digitizers and GPS are also required.

Software

This includes not only GIS or AutoCAD software but also various drawing, statistical, imaging, database and other software required for the capture, display and analysis of data.

Data

Finding existing datasets in a form ready to use with your data is a challenge faced by any project.  Data can come in many forms: representations of real world features as points, lines or polygons, aerial or satellite imagery, other types of remotely sensed data as well as non-spatial datasets.

Procedures

Well-defined, consistent methods are required to produce accurate, reproducible results. Metadata (data about the data) is key for documenting these processes.

People

YOU are the most important component in a GIS since you add the human sense of purpose. People must develop the procedures and define the tasks of GIS.
