Start ArcPad and select any ArcPad map (.apm)
I. Main toolbar

A. To toggle display of toolbars
Main toolbar / Tools / Toolbars
B. To display map scale bar and more
Main toolbar / Tools for scale bar, pan frame, north arrow
C. To activate and check GPS status
Main toolbar / GPS Position sub-menu
Activate GPS
Check ArcPad GPS settings
Check Trimble GPScorrect settings
Icons for battery, # of SVs and accuracy estimate
Skyplot: echoed settings, current location & PDOP

II. Browse toolbar

To view map and move around map
The first 3 menus are for setting zoom, pan and extent of map
These including Zoom to Layer, Center on GPS & Bookmarks
III. Command toolbar

Lock/Unlock screen to prevent accidental screen taps  
The Toggle Pen button turns off digitizing - only GPS can be used for editing  
IV. Basic data collection techniques
For EVERY feature -
1. Choose layer to edit
2. From edit tool bar and choose polyline or polygon (not needed for
point)
3. Choose GPS tool (point, vertex, stream)
4. Complete the geometry with green arrow (polyline and polygon)
5. Enter attributes
6. Click ok to save features
A. Point
1. Choose layer to be edited via the Start/Stop Editing Tool 
Note: Only Point, Polyline and Polygon are for GPS Capture
All other items are for digitizing ONLY
2. To start collecting GPS positions, tap on GPS-POINT  
3. Enter attributes as needed
4. At the top, left corner of window is the % of required positions already collected for averaging. This value was set in the GPS Preferences Capture tab
5. Geography Tab to view coordinate position
6. Optional: Tap the GPS button to start over and re-collect positions
7. Tap OK to save feature
Note: For features of any Geometry type, on the Edit toolbar / Offset menu, Repeat Attributes will copy attribute values entered for any previous collected with any matching attribute field.
B. Line or Polygon by Streaming
- Choose layer to be edited via The Start/Stop Editing Tool
- From the Point drop-down menu, tap on POLYLINE (not line)
or POLYGON 
- Position antennae over desired location
- Tap on GPS-Stream
to start collecting in stream mode
- Move to collect continuous vertices for feature at the interval as specified in the GPS Preferences Capture tab
- Tap on GPS-Stream to pause collecting, re-tap GPS-Stream to continue collection
- At end of the feature, tap PROCEED

- Enter attributes as needed
- Tap OK to save feature
When streaming, be sure to collect a position at defining turns and corners. For more the most accuracy, collect these as an averaged vertex.
C. Line or Polygon by Vertices
Choose layer to be edited via The Start/Stop Editing Tool 
- From the Point drop-down menu, tap on POLYLINE (not line)
or POLYGON  
- Position antennae over desired location
- Tap on GPS-Vertex
to start collecting positions to averaged for vertex
- Wait until all positions are collected
- Move to next vertex
- Repeat steps 3-6 as needed
- (Optional) To delete the most recently collected vertex, tap the Undo
button on command toolbar.
- At end of the feature, tap PROCEED

- Enter attributes as needed
- Tap OK to save feature
V. To review collected features and their attributes
1. Query tool to review attributes of collected features  
2. Query tab to enter search criteria; no search criteria lists all features
3. Results tab lists resulting feature(s)
4. Tap any feature, to select it. It will also be highlighted in blue on the map
5. When finished Clear selected features on the map from Query menu

VI. To delete a feature
1. Select a feature from the map with the Select tool  
2. To identify the layer in which the feature resides, tap the Feature Properties tool  
3. The layer name is listed at the top of the window
4. Choose that layer to be edited via The Start/Stop Editing Tool 
5. Tap the Feature Properties menu, choose Delete Feature 

VII. To complete the field session
Features are saved once OK is tapped
It is not necessary to save changes to the .ArcPad map (apm)
Disconnect GPS
From the Main toolbar , Exit ArcPad 

Note: X’ing out of ArcPad only minimizes, but does not exit the program
